Heavy-Duty Metal Garden Edging Made in the UK
Create crisp, defined borders with WEATHER IT’s heavy-duty 3mm steel garden edging, handmade in the UK for domestic gardens and landscaping projects. Available in galvanised steel, mild patina steel and Corten steel, each metal edging strip offers a clean, practical way to separate lawns, paths, flower beds and planting areas.
The flexible design also makes it easy to form curved borders, giving you more freedom when shaping beds, pathways and landscaped features. For a neat finish, each section connects using WEATHER IT’s simple ‘Ziplock’ system, with stakes passing through welded steel rings to pull adjoining strips tightly together and secure them into the ground.
Available in a range of heights, our metal lawn edging can be matched with suitable spike sizes for a secure fit across different garden and landscaping applications.
How does the Steel Garden Lawn Edging fit together?
Our steel garden edging is designed to make installation as straightforward as possible. Each strip connects neatly to the next without the need for fiddly nuts, bolts or complicated fixings, helping you create a smooth, continuous finish around lawns, paths, flower beds and curved borders.
- ‘Ziplock’ System: Each metal edging strip features interlocking steel rings professionally welded to the ends. Simply drive a stake through the rings to pull the adjoining sections tightly together while anchoring the edging securely into the ground.
- 360-Degree Protection: The connecting system helps keep each section closely aligned from every angle, reducing the risk of visible gaps even when the edging follows curves, corners or more intricate garden shapes.
How does the metal garden edging stay in place?
- Each edging strip has a welded ring and ground spike every 500 mm at the rear.
- The spike goes into the ground 2/3 the height of the strip.
- Make a channel in the ground for the steel edging to sit in.
- Bury at least 1/3 of the height of the edge into the ground for ultimate stability.
As our metal lawn edging can come in varying heights, the spike sizes will be made to match. For example, if you buy our edging measuring 150 mm, the spikes will be 450 mm with 300 mm going into the ground.
How Do I Create a 90° Corner with Steel Garden Edging?
There are two straightforward ways to create corners with your steel garden edging, depending on the finish you want.
- Cut and join: Cut the straight length into two pieces using a cutting disc and angle grinder, then position the sections together at your chosen angle. This gives you plenty of flexibility when creating sharper or more precise corners.
- Score and bend: For a continuous corner, score the reverse of the metal edging strip at the required point using an angle grinder. Place a solid piece of timber along the scored line, then carefully lever the strip into the angle you need.
If the scored section begins to close before you reach the required angle, simply open the cut again with the angle grinder and continue bending until the corner sits as intended.
Where Can Metal Garden Edging Be Used?
Steel garden edging is a versatile way to bring more structure and definition to an outdoor space. Its slim profile helps create a neat, considered finish without dominating the design, while the flexibility of the steel allows it to follow both crisp straight lines and more flowing curves. That makes it a practical choice for everything from simple garden updates to more detailed landscaping schemes.
- Lawn edging: Use metal lawn edging to create a crisp divide between grass and surrounding beds, helping lawns keep a neat, defined shape.
- Path edging: Metal path edging is ideal for framing gravel, stone or paved paths and keeping the route clearly separated from nearby planting or lawn.
- Flower bed borders: Create tidy boundaries around flower beds and planting areas, helping different sections of the garden feel more organised.
- Driveway edging: Steel edging can be used along driveway edges to create a clean transition between hard landscaping, lawns and planted areas.
- Landscape edging: For larger landscaping projects, metal landscape edging can help define zones, introduce structure and create strong straight or curved lines.
- Garden borders: Use steel garden edging to shape borders around planting, lawns and pathways, giving each area a clear edge while helping the overall layout feel more cohesive.
Steel Garden Edging Material Options
Corten Steel Garden Edging
Corten steel garden edging gradually develops its distinctive rust-coloured patina as it weathers outdoors. Durable and weather-resistant, it’s well suited to changing British conditions and brings a warm, characterful finish to garden and landscaping projects.
Galvanised Steel Garden Edging
Galvanised steel garden edging is treated with a zinc coating to help protect the metal against rust and corrosion. It keeps its clean, metallic silver appearance, making it a good choice for gardens where you want a sharper, more uniform finish.
Mild Patina Steel Edging
Mild patina steel edging develops a warm, earthy brown finish that gives borders a more natural, understated look. It works particularly well in traditional, rustic or planting-heavy garden designs where you want the edging to blend into the wider scheme.
How to Install Metal Garden Edging
Installing your steel garden edging is straightforward with a little preparation. Map out the border first so you know exactly where each section needs to sit, then work along the line one strip at a time for a neat, secure finish.
- Measure your border: Use a tape measure to work out how much steel garden edging you’ll need for the full length of the area.
- Prepare the ground: Dig a shallow trench along your planned line, deep enough to position the edging at the required height.
- Position the first strip: Set your first section of metal edging into the trench and check that it follows the line of your border.
- Connect each section: Overlap the welded rings of the next strip, then drive the supplied stake through them to secure the two pieces together.
- Follow your layout: Continue adding sections along the border, adjusting the metal edging as needed to follow curves and corners.
- Finish the installation: Backfill around the edging, firm the soil into place and level the surrounding ground for a clean, tidy result.

FAQs
How long will it take for the edging to weather?
If you have chosen galvanised steel for your edging, the colouration won’t alter or weather throughout its lifespan. If you choose either patina or Corten steel lawn edging, it will be delivered in its raw steel finish as standard. The distinct finishes will develop in a matter of weeks and continue to do so over 6-12 months. Please enquire about Corten steel lawn edging that is pre-weathered – although lead times may increase for this option.
What is metal lawn edging and how does it benefit my garden?
Metal lawn edging is a type of barrier used to define and border garden beds, driveways, paths and lawns, providing a clean, organised look to distinct areas while also preventing grass and weeds from spreading.
What are the different material options available?
At Weather It, you can choose from galvanised steel, patina steel or Corten steel for your metal garden edging. Each material is fabricated into edging right here in the UK by our expert team, providing durable and corrosion-resistant edging made to last.
How long does it take for Corten steel edging to develop a patina?
The typical time Corten steel edging takes to develop a patina is between 6 to 12 months, depending on environmental conditions. In a hurry to get that stunning autumnal patina finish? Just let us know you want your Corten edging pre-weathered, and our team will make it happen!
Can I customise the shape and length of the edging?
Yes, we provide our 3 mm thick edging in standard lengths of 75 mm, 100 mm, 150 mm, 200 mm and 250 mm, but we can cut bespoke lengths upon request. You can also shape your edging for customised barriers thanks to our malleable materials and innovative ‘zip-lock’ installation. Why not check out our YouTube video  to see how to install it easily?
Is the edging safe for use on all types of soil and terrain?
It is perfectly safe for all plant types, as whilst a small amount of zinc or iron may leach into the soil, they are naturally occurring minerals anyway and are likely to be present in such trace quantities they will not affect any of your plants, or lawn.
What bend raduis can 3mm edging achieve?
3mm thick steel edging can comfortably form a radius of 1000mm (1m)
Is Metal Lawn Edging Suitable for Curved Borders?
Yes. The 3mm steel can be shaped to follow curved layouts, making it suitable for rounded lawns, sweeping paths and more intricate garden borders where a clean, continuous edge is required.
Is Steel Garden Edging Better Than Plastic or Timber Edging?
Steel garden edging is a strong choice if you want a slim, durable finish with plenty of design flexibility. It works beautifully for straight lines, curves and structured landscaping, offering a clean, long-lasting alternative to plastic or timber edging.
