Corrosion-Resistant Corten Steel

Why Should You Upgrade to Corten Steel?

Superior Durability and Longevity

Unlike other types of steel or metals, Corten steel develops a protective rust layer or patina that protects the metal and prevents further corrosion, meaning it will withstand harsh weather conditions and last significantly longer.

Minimal Maintenance

Once the protective patina layer has developed on your Corten steel product, it needs virtually no maintenance! Other types of steel may need treating or repainting, but Corten steel continues to look stunning without effort!

Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal

Corten steel’s rich, earthy patina creates a unique, natural look that evolves beautifully over time. Blending seamlessly with any garden or setting, this visually striking element can’t be matched by other steels.

Hear What Our Customers Say

FAQ's

  • What is a bottomless raised bed?

A bottomless raised bed has no base, allowing roots to grow deeper into the ground beneath. This design is ideal for deep-rooted plants or vegetables while maintaining the benefits of raised bed gardening, such as better drainage and easier access.

  • How do you make a Corten steel raised bed trough?

First, we laser-cut the steel to ensure our design is precisely and consistently replicated for each item. Once the laser cutting is complete, we use specialist machinery to apply folds to the sheet steel. We complete the fabrication by hand using only the best, qualified fabricators who take immense pride in their work.

Each Corten raised bed has a double-folded return top lip feature. Many similar products on the market leave a steel edge or a single fold, but we have opted for a double fold for several reasons:

    1. It’s a much higher quality, premium finish- it just looks so much better!
    2. It gives the trough unbelievable strength and rigidity.
    3. It’s safer for hands when planting.

The corners and connecting sides are fully seam welded and we take time and effort to smooth welds which provides amazing corner and edge detail. Once we’re finished you won’t know where the welds are! As they are handmade by our professional fabricators each trough is slightly unique adding to the charm of this product.

  • What is it made of?

These planters are made from 100% genuine, certified Corten steel (also known as weathering steel or COR-TEN steel). COR refers to the metal’s property of corrosion resistance, while TEN denotes the metal’s tensile strength.

We make our Corten steel raised bed trough from structural grade, 2mm thick steel as standard. Corten Steel develops a unique and distinct patina when exposed to the elements. The oxidised patina forms a barrier to slow down the oxidisation process which prolongs the life of the material.

  • How long will it take for my Corten steel raised bed trough to weather?

The Corten steel trough will start to develop a beautifully unique orange and brown patina in a matter of days and will continue to evolve over six to twelve months. The speed of the weathering process will depend on factors such as weather, climate and proximity to the coast or sea spray.

  • Will the runoff from the raised bed stain my patio or lawn?

Yes, during the initial weathering process, the runoff from rain or watering can stain surfaces beneath the bed. We recommend placing the bed on a surface where the runoff can be safely absorbed or using a protective layer if needed.

  • Can I order the planter pre-weathered?

Absolutely! We can deliver your Corten steel raised bed planter pre-weathered and displaying the beautiful patina straight out of the box. Simply check the pre-weathered option when ordering. If you’d prefer to watch the patina develop naturally over time, go for the un-weathered option.

  • How do I maintain my Corten steel planter?

You don’t have to! Unlike wooden or plastic alternatives, no maintenance is required at all. All you need to do is fill, plant and enjoy! See our operation and maintenance manual for our Corten steel planters for more information.
