Choosing the Right Steel Edging
Colour or Finish
Galvanised steel edging is coated with zinc, which forms a silver layer that protects the steel against weathering and corrosion. This type of steel is one of the most cost-effective for landscape design and will maintain its original colouring over time.
Mild patina steel offers distinctive, autumnal shades of red and brown. This patina layer forms gradually over approximately 12 to 18 months. Our mild steel is structural grade, providing a strong, durable choice.
Corten steel garden edging develops the same beautiful reddish patina as mild steel, but the Corten patina is corrosion resistant. The orange outer layer protects the interior against rusting, making Corten steel among the most durable options. We can supply Corten garden edging pre-weathered or in its raw state – simply let us know when you place your order.
| Height | Typical Use Cases | Visible Upstand (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 75–100 mm
| Lawns, beds, paths | 50–75 mm |
| 150 mm
| Paths, driveways, stronger definition | 100–125 mm |
| 200–250 mm
| Driveways, raised beds, stair risers | 150–200 mm |
NB: installers should firmly bury at least 1/3 of the height for the best stability.
All garden edging is supplied in 2.4m lengths and can be cut to size with a circular saw as needed.
Thickness
Use 3mm steel garden edging for forming tight curves and corners. This is the best option for edging lawn beds and paths with light to moderate foot traffic, as well as intricate path and bed layouts.
Choose 6mm steel edging for a heavy-duty option suitable for driveways and public spaces. This thickness has excellent tensile strength in all three types, and can withstand vehicle loads without damage. 6mm edging can also be formed into smooth curves, but is unsuitable for complex layouts.
Maintenance Tips
We pride ourselves on providing long-lasting and maintenance-free products our customers need.
Maintaining Galvanised Steel
The zinc coating of galvanised steel is corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for low-maintenance garden edging. To extend the cosmetic life in harsh environments, you may choose to apply a protective paint before installation.
Maintaining Mild Patina Steel and Corten Steel
Both these edging types are highly durable and require very little maintenance. The patina develops over the first year after installation and may vary depending on weather conditions.
During early weathering, expect some run-off when the steel is wet. This can stain porous paving with the red patina colour if installed directly next to the stone, so we recommend adding a small channel of loose stone or gravel to act as a barrier. Turn or replace gravel if the colour transfers.
You could also order Corten steel garden edging pre-weathered, removing the risk of run-off staining your pathways. Note that mild steel is not corrosion resistant, so it will not last as long as Corten steel.
Corten Steel Edging: UK-Made and Sustainable
Our Corten steel lawn edging is 100% recyclable. We manufacture all products in the West Midlands using renewable energy and recycle all offcuts, reducing waste at every stage.
How to Install Steel Lawn Edging (Ziplock System)
Recommended equipment:
- Rubber mallet or a hammer and wooden tapping block
- Spade
- Stakes (included)
- String Line
- Spirit level
- Gloves
- Eye protection
- Optional: Angle grinder for cuts
- Plan and mark your edge line with a string line. Check levels and clear obstructions.
- If installing on turf or soil, dig a shallow channel, 25-50mm deep, along the line.
- Set the first strip. Position it with the desired visible upstand. Remember to bury at least â…“ of the height. Check alignment with the spirit level and string line.
- Set the second strip and align the rings welded at each end.
- Using a mallet or hammer and woodblock, drive a stake through the rings to lock the sections together and anchor them to the ground.
- Fix the full length with stakes through the rings. These are located every 500mm along the strip.
- Re-level as needed. Compact soil on either side and tidy the edge line.
To form curves and corners:
Hand-bend smooth curves. For corner angles up to 90°, bend 3mm steel edging around a tool of the appropriate angle. For 6mm steel, cut with an angle grinder and butt the pieces together. The stakes will maintain your curves and angles.
Installation Tips
- Wet hard soil to ease installation.
- Use an edging tool to define a shallow trench for the strip.
- Near paving, add a gravel barrier to mitigate early patina run-off.
FAQs
Will Corten or patina steel stain paving?
If delivered un-weathered, expect some coloured run-off in the early stages of the patina formation, up to six months. This can stain wood decking, gravel and porous stone paving. We recommend adding a narrow gravel channel between paving and edging to mitigate staining from run-off. Alternatively, request pre-weathered Corten steel.
Which thickness should I choose: 3mm or 6mm?
The choice depends on your layout and edging location. For steel edging on driveways and in public spaces, 6mm is recommended to withstand accidental vehicle damage.
To create tight curves and angles under 90°, 3mm steel edging is easiest to work with.Is the edging easy to install?
Yes, installation is quick and easy with our simple Ziplock stake system. All edging is fitted with rings at 500mm intervals and supplied with stakes to anchor it into the ground. For the best way to install your Corten garden edging, see above.
Can I create curves and 90° corners?
Yes, we recommend hand-bending steel edging into curves during installation and securing with stakes. For 90° angles, cut edging with an angle grinder and butt the edges against each other, before securing with stakes.
Do you offer pre-weathered Corten garden edging?
Of course. Simply let us know when you place your order that you’d like your Corten steel pre-weathered and we will deliver it in its final patinaed condition.
