What is a Corten Steel Garden Screen?
A Corten steel garden screen is an elegant addition to your garden. These flat, laser-cut screens are available in a range of designs, from organic ivy to classic geometric shapes. WEATHER IT uses Corten steel for all of our screens, which forms a protective patina and creates a uniquely beautiful finish over time.
Garden screens as functional elements
A garden screen is a valuable functional element in any outdoor space. Some examples of how these laser-cut garden screens can be used include:
- Squaring off patios: A decorative screen allows sunlight through while effectively separating outdoor areas, perfect for adding definition to your garden.
- Creating privacy around hot tubs: Provide privacy and create a unique hot tub space with Corten steel garden screens surrounding the space.
- Concealing bins and composting: Keep bins and composting out of sight with the clever placement of screens, separating the function and aesthetic in your outdoor spaces.
- Preventing wind in seating areas: Placing weather-resistant metal screens around seating areas can reduce the effect of windy weather, making dining outdoors an easy possibility.
Durability and longevity
Our weather-resistant garden screens are available in a raw metal finish, which, over time, will develop the distinct orange patina finish. Corten steel is an excellent material as it naturally forms a protective layer that resists corrosion, ensuring long-lasting durability and a beautifully weathered appearance.
In addition to being weather-resistant, our contemporary garden screens are designed to look better as time goes on – because of the rain, wind and seasonal temperature changes, rather than in spite of it. That protective layer of patina makes our outdoor metal screens look better year-on-year.
Maintenance and care
Our Corten steel garden screens require minimal maintenance and upkeep:
- Simply rinse with water or wipe using a soft cloth to remove dirt and debris.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean it to prevent damaging the natural patina.
- Ensure installation in an area with good drainage.
To minimise staining from rust run-off during the early stages of the patina process, Corten steel screens should be installed where possible in areas with good drainage, where water will not sit against the surface of the screen.
Installation and integration
Installation is easy with our laser-cut metal screens:
- Unbox: Once you receive your outdoor metal screen, it is ready out of the box for installation.
- Plan: Place the screen against your chosen spot to visualise the height, placement and light patterns to determine if you are happy.
- Choose fixings: Every screen includes four keyholes, enabling them to be hung effortlessly, and two screw holes for secure, direct mounting.
- Mount on walls: Mount your new Corten steel garden screen directly to a wall or fence, using the keyholes for a clean, floating look or screw holes for a flush look.
- Attach to a stand or pergolas: Attach your Corten steel panels vertically or horizontally to create your desired look, adding extra privacy to areas of your garden.
- Post installation: Opt for a wooden post attachment to create a freestanding design in your garden, allowing for greater freedom with placement.

Design Inspiration and Styling Ideas
We understand it can be difficult to visualise where a Corten steel garden screen would fit best in your home. A few common examples include garden screens used to surround patios, hot tubs and seating areas. They can also be paired with lighting, planters and outdoor furniture, creating an outdoor focal point or gathering spot to socialise.
Garden screens also create an effortless contrast with surrounding greenery due to their Corten steel patina. For rustic gardens, the natural patina of Corten steel blends harmoniously with wood and greenery, excellent for creating a tranquil and relaxing area.

FAQs
Will Corten Steel Rust Too Much?
Corten steel develops a natural patina and protective layer, so it rusts but in a controlled way. Over time the rusting process slows to create a lasting and weather-resistant finish.
Are They Suitable for Coastal Climates?
Yes, but placement is important as coastal environments are prone to a higher salt content in the air, which can speed up the patina development. In coastal environments it’s best to position garden screens where rain can wash over them naturally to ensure even weathering.
Can I get a Custom Design or Size?
Yes. Custom garden screens can be bespoken to your preferred size, pattern or level of opacity. You can even request custom laser-cut designs to match your garden’s theme or branding for commercial spaces.
How do I Maintain Garden Screen Panels?
Corten steel garden screens require little in the way of maintenance. Simply rinse off any dirt or debris and occasionally wipe them down with a dry cloth.
Do Corten steel garden screens rust?
No, if cared-for properly – which only requires placing your metal screens in a well-draining area – your Corten steel garden screens will not rust. Instead, they will develop a beautiful patina over time.
Will a Corten screen stain my patio?
If your Corten steel is installed directly on your patio, it may cause staining as a result of rust run-off. This occurs mainly in the first 3-6 months of installation, though it can last longer. You can remedy this by using a drip tray under your installed screen or positioning your metal screen slightly off your patio on grass or soil.
How long do Corten steel screens last outdoors?
Corten steel screens are incredibly long-lasting, whether you use them as Garden privacy screens or subtle features. These screens can last anywhere from 25 to 100 years, with a standard lifespan of around 30-50 years.
Do you offer bespoke laser-cut screens?
Yes, we can create a custom laser-cut screen design to your particular specifications. Speak to our team directly to discuss the pattern that you’d like for your screen, and we can provide you with a quote for our bespoke services.
Can I mount these screens to a fence or wall?
WEATHER IT metal screens include both keyholes and screw holes, allowing you to mount your screens to walls, fences, pergolas and more. This flexible approach enables your Corten steel screen to be hung flush with the surface or with a floating style.
Do screens provide full privacy?
As screens contain patterns that allow light through, we cannot recommend them if you require complete and total privacy. However, some of the denser patterns provide ample coverage while allowing light through, making it perfect for dining areas, hot tubs and other outdoor spaces where a degree of extra privacy is required.
How do I clean a Corten steel screen?
Simply rinsing your screen with water and wiping it down with a soft, clean cloth is ideal for cleaning a Corten screen. We do not suggest that you use other cleaning chemicals on your garden screens, as this can damage the natural patina that protects the steel.
