Corten steel water features offer a combination of distinctive design and practical advantages. Key benefits include:
- Distinctive weathered appearance: Corten steel develops its characteristic rust-coloured patina naturally when exposed to the elements, creating a warm, textured finish that works beautifully in contemporary and traditional garden designs.
- Durable and low-maintenance: Designed for outdoor use, Corten steel is well suited to changing UK weather conditions and requires minimal maintenance after its protective patina has developed.
- Made to last: The weathering process helps protect the steel from further corrosion, giving Corten water features the durability needed for long-term outdoor use.
Recyclable material: Steel can be recycled, making Corten steel a practical material choice for landscaping projects where material longevity and recyclability matter. - Recyclable material: Steel can be recycled, making Corten steel a practical material choice for landscaping projects where material longevity and recyclability matter.
Every WEATHER IT garden water feature is handmade in the UK from high-quality materials, combining robust construction with clean, contemporary design. Each piece brings together British craftsmanship and practical durability for outdoor use.
Every Corten water feature is supplied unweathered, so its distinctive surface develops naturally once exposed to the great British weather. As the steel reacts to changing outdoor conditions, its familiar rust-coloured patina gradually emerges, giving the feature its characteristic Corten finish.
H2: Types of Corten Steel Water Features
From gently flowing water to still, serene garden ponds, our range of Corten steel water features includes designs for diverse spaces, styles and landscaping projects. Choose from water tables, ponds, troughs and water dishes, all handmade in the UK by WEATHER IT.
Corten Steel Water Tables
Corten steel water tables combine clean, contemporary shapes with the movement and sound of circulating water. Available in round, square and rectangular designs, they create an eye-catching focal point for patios, landscaped gardens and modern outdoor spaces.
Corten Steel Ponds
Our Corten steel ponds combine simple shapes with the distinctive finish of weathered steel. Choose from cube or cylindrical designs to create a pond that works with contemporary layouts, traditional planting or anything in between, providing a home for fish or a useful resource for local wildlife.
Corten Steel Water Troughs
With their long, streamlined shape, Corten steel water troughs work particularly well in larger gardens, along boundaries and within structured landscaping. Their proportions help create a strong horizontal line, making them ideal for defining zones or adding structure to an outdoor space.
Corten Steel Water Dishes
With their low, shallow profile, Corten steel water dishes are a versatile choice for smaller gardens, patios and landscaped spaces. They introduce water in a subtle, considered way while still bringing the distinctive rust-coloured finish that makes Corten steel stand out.
How to Choose the Right Garden Water Feature
There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to Corten water features. The best choice depends on your garden, how much space you have and the kind of feature you want to create.
- Size: Consider how much garden or patio space you have available and how prominent you want your water feature to be. A compact design can sit neatly within planting or beside a seating area, while a larger feature can become a focal point in its own right.
- Style: Decide on the look you want to create. Round designs can feel more relaxed, while square, rectangular and trough-style water features can give a garden a stronger architectural edge.
- Function: Think about how you want the water feature to behave in the space. Water tables bring movement and gentle sound, while ponds offer a calmer, still-water effect.
- Location: Choose a spot that works with the way you use your garden. A water feature can sit neatly beside a patio, become part of a planted area or create a focal point visible from inside the house.

Corten Water Features for Gardens and Landscaped Spaces
From compact courtyards to larger landscaped gardens, Corten water features can be used in plenty of different ways. Their simple forms suit contemporary gardens and architectural spaces, while the warm, weathered finish also sits comfortably alongside traditional planting and greener, more natural garden schemes.
In smaller spaces, a well-placed water feature can add interest without taking over the whole garden. In larger landscaped areas, ponds, water tables and troughs can help shape the layout, highlight a particular view or anchor seating and planting areas.
Corten water features can also work particularly well in commercial landscaping, including entrance areas, communal courtyards and professionally designed outdoor spaces where material choice forms part of the overall scheme.

FAQs
How do I keep a Corten steel pond clean?
On arrival, check for any manufacturing residue, such as oil, and remove with mild soap and water. Regularly rinse with water to prevent debris build-up and remove any stains with a cloth. For features that include pumps, such as water tables, drain the water for winter to prevent internal algae growth and ice damage.
How do I stop insects in water features?
Water features with pumps should not attract insects, as they are constantly circulating. For still-water ponds, insects are a natural part of the ecosystem and will feed other visitors to your pond, such as frogs. We suggest planting citronella or lavender as natural insect repellents.
How do I install a Corten steel water feature?
When your water feature is delivered, make sure you have a prepared area where you’d like it to sit. Water features must be installed on a flat, suitable area. Place the water feature in situ and fill with water.
If your Corten steel water feature requires a pump, it will be supplied with a cable. Run this to your outdoor power supply in a suitable conduit. If you wish to run the cable underground, use armoured trunking to avoid damage later on.
How do Corten steel water features evolve over time?
Most water features will arrive in a familiar steel grey. Over time, exposure to water will oxidise the steel to develop the rust-coloured patina. You will start to see colours change after the first time it is exposed to water, but it will take up to 12 months for Corten steel to settle into its distinctive colour.
Once this layer is established, the colour will change very little, but the protective layer is constantly renewed and is effectively self-healing. If the steel is scratched or otherwise damaged, the affected area will oxidise once again.
Are Corten steel water features suitable for all garden sizes?
Our range of contemporary Corten steel water features can be tailored to suit any size of outdoor space, because we make every one ourselves.
Will Corten steel water features rust all the way through?
No – thanks to its protective layer, Corten steel is extremely durable. The patina protects the interior from further corrosion, making this material exceptionally long-lasting. While it is only a relatively thin layer, Corten steel’s rust-coloured finish can only be removed with mechanical sanding.
Are Corten steel water features environmentally friendly?
Yes, they are. Corten steel lasts a very long time, meaning you’re unlikely to ever need a replacement, but if you do ever decide to part ways with your water feature, it can be completely recycled into something new.
Can I leave my Corten steel water feature outside during winter?
You can. However, we do recommend draining it of water (or insulating it if it contains pond life or fish) during particularly cold months to ensure the expansion caused by freezing water doesn’t result in warping or cracking of the metal.
