Corten steel is not a new material and has been used in some of the world’s more creative architectural projects for decades. That’s before it found its natural home in the garden and landscaping industry as an ideal material for a plethora of landscaping products, including bespoke planters.
There are examples of the architectural use of steel such as the John Deere HQ in Moline, Illinois, USA, and the Angel of the North which features 200 tonnes of Corten steel standing 20 metres above the site of an abandoned colliery overlooking the A1. Also in 2015, Sanjay Puri Architects used Corten steel to construct ‘The Crescent’ in Surat, India.
Steel is an increasingly popular material in modern architectural projects, thanks to its strength, striking appearance and high durability, and is seeing growing usage as a material in the production of industrial furniture, including bespoke planters and garden furniture for similar reasons.
Benefits of Choosing Steel
Durability
Corten steel forms an oxidised layer on its surface, protecting it from further weathering effects, making it impressively durable. Mild patina steel provides a similar aesthetic finish without the self-healing benefits, however, it still falls within our lengthy guarantee, and both will add a rustic charm and beauty to any landscaping project. Corten steel not your thing? WEATHER IT expertly powder coats steel planters to add a splash of colour to your garden and also makes sure they’ll last for years.
Low Maintenance
The UK climate can pose a challenge to the finish and shape of many outdoor planters, but once our bespoke Corten steel planters form an oxidised layer, they don’t require any further maintenance. Even if it gets damaged, the oxidisation will simply reform. Powder coated bespoke planters require a bit more love. Check out our operation and maintenance manuals for Corten steel and powder coated planters for more info.
Sustainability
Among growing concerns around the renewability of construction materials, steel is thriving as a building medium. This is thanks to its sheer durability, it won’t need replacing frequently, and the fact that it is 100% recyclable makes it a greener option than many other materials.
FAQs: Simplifying Your Experience
Is a steel planter bad for plants?
Steel planters are safe for plants. Steel is made up of naturally incurring minerals and compounds reducing any negative effects on plants. Furthermore, the protective patina on Corten steel acts as a barrier, slowing rust from leaching into the soil. Our powder coated and galvanised steel planters are coated to completely seal the surfaces.Â
What is the life expectancy of bespoke steel planters?
Our bespoke steel planters, regardless of shape, have an impressive lifespan. The durable patina layer protects the steel from deep corrosion, making these planters a long-term choice for both residential and commercial landscapes. With minimal maintenance, our steel trough planters withstand UK weather exceptionally well.Â
Can you paint bespoke steel planters?
While it’s possible to paint steel planters, many prefer the natural rusted finish that develops over time. Painting may require regular upkeep, as it can wear or chip due to weather exposure. If you prefer a painted style, why not consider our powder coated finishes available in a variety of colours? We can even laser-cut logos or create bespoke sizes and shapes.Â
How long does it take for Corten steel to rust?
Steel planters typically take around 6 to 12 months to fully develop their protective rust patina. This weathering process varies depending on exposure to rain and humidity. Our powder coated and galvanised bespoke planters won’t rust as they have protection against the elements and our mild steel planters will continue to oxidise, although they are also covered by our long guarantees.Â
Are steel planters bad for the environment?
No, in fact, quite the opposite! Steel planters are generally eco-friendly due to their long-lasting nature, reducing the need for replacements. The rust layer minimises deeper corrosion, lowering environmental impact. Plus, at the end of their lives, they are 100% recyclable meaning they can be melted down and reformed into a completely new item. Â
What is the difference between galvanised steel and Corten steel?
Corten steel forms a natural rust layer that protects the metal unless it’s powder coated to protect it, while galvanised steel is coated with zinc to prevent rusting. Corten steel will develop a unique patina over time, while galvanised steel is dipped in a zinc bath to produce a corrosion resistant protection giving a more polished look although it may eventually show signs of wear if the zinc layer is damaged. Â
